Why You Need to Dive Deep Into Yourself This Fall

The meaning of Fall

What is fall? To some it is a season of color or of change. To others it brings coldness and soon snow. Fall symbolizes a time of death, shedding what is no longer needed in one’s life, and preparing for a new cycle.

In ecology, fall is a time where animals prepare for cold months with methods such as growing more layers for warmth, storing food for hibernation, or migrating away to someplace warm. It is a time for the last large harvest where fruit is produced by plants whose seeds most likely need the cold snow for germination. Trees slowly start losing there chloroplasts (green organelles in plant cell that capture sunlight) showing their true colors of orange, red, or yellow. Like animals, people too can take fall as a time for change, removal, and preparation.

“Fall” in practice

What are some ways you can reflect on yourself this fall?

  1. Reflect on the past

Look at how far you have came. Even if you are in a lower spot than before, you are still pushing through life and getting through things that you haven’t done before. Acknowledge the change that has been made in yourself.

  2. Acknowledge your growth

Just as in plants, growth takes a lot of our energy. It can be incredibly rewarding, yet draining. Acknowledge how far you have came this year and give yourself credit for all the small steps you my have taken. You deserve to reward yourself even for small achievements.

  3. Release the old, unnecessary baggage

Just as trees release their browning leaves, you can release your baggage. What are you holding onto that isn’t serving you anymore? What do you no longer want to put your energy into? Fall is a time for preserving energy, make sure yours isn’t being used up by unnecessary things.

  4. Change your outlook/perception

How can you change how you see certain situations? Just as trees reveal there true colors in fall, you can reveal your true thoughts and emotions.

  5. Hit reset on your goals

After you have reflected and released the old, plan ahead for the new. What do you hope to see yourself doing differently in the future? How can you build upon what you have already created for yourself? Plan, but there is no need to act upon any of your new goals just yet.

  6. Slow down

Take things slow. There is no need to jump to new hobbies or relationships. Take time to yourself (hibernate if you need to). As it gets colder, focus inward on yourself and your happiness. Make a game plan for yourself for once spring arrives. What do you need to do internally before spring?

Mimic nature this fall: reflect, release, and return inward. You deserve a time where you put yourself first and slow down.

Fall to winter

As fall comes to an end, temperatures drop even more. Leaves no longer fall but rather cover the ground in shades of browns and tans. Winter is a time where growth comes to a halt and most things lie dormant. Nature becomes still, preserving energy and food until spring.

Winter symbolizes a time to slow down and look within oneself. You can take this as a time to reconnect with yourself and be gentle. Dive into something new or simple. Be still. Like plants, humans need periods of dormancy too. Between the holidays, it may be wise to be still and reflect on what’s going on internally. How can you show up for others during the holidays if you neglect showing up for yourself?
